STATEMENT OF FAITH
- We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, trustworthy and true, without error, Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
- We believe there is only one God who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19)
- We believe Jesus Christ is God, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His death that paid for our sin through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension/rising up to the right hand of the Father and in His personal return in power and glory. (John 1:1; Matthew 1:18,25; Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 9:15-22; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Acts 1:9-11; Hebrews 9:27-28)
- We believe each member of the human race is fallen, sinful and lost, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for salvation. Redemption is wholly by the blood of Christ, and salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in our Lord Jesus Christ. (John 3:16; John 5:24; Titus 3:3-7)
- We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, who lives within and guides Christians so they are enabled to live godly lives. (John 14:15-26; John 16:5-16; Ephesians 1:13-14)
- We believe in eternal life, and that through belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, we spend eternity with the Lord in Heaven. We believe that in rejecting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we receive eternal suffering in hell. (Matthew 25:31-46; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
- We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, that all believers are members of His body, the Church. (Philippians 2:1-4). We believe there are two Christian ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism signifies that the believer is buried with Christ and is risen with him to walk in newness of life. The Lord’s Supper is instituted by the Lord himself exclusively for His own. In the observance of the Lord’s Supper, believers remember Him, they show His death until He comes, and they profess their union with Christ and ongoing faith in Him as their only Savior.
- We believe God’s design for sexual intimacy is to be expressed only within the context of marriage. God instituted marriage between one man and one woman as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society. For this reason, we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one man and one woman. (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5-6; Mark 10:6-9; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9)
- We believe that God created all human beings in His image. Therefore, we believe that human life is sacred from conception to its natural end; that we must honor the physical and spiritual needs of all people; following Christ’s example, we believe that every person should be treated with love, dignity and respect. (Psalm 139:13; Isaiah 49:1; Jeremiah 1:5; Matthew 22:37-39; Romans 12:20-21; Galatians 6:10)
Our Story
Gospel Light Baptist Church held its first meeting on Sunday morning, August 5, 1979. The congregation consisted of eleven adults and eight children. On November 3, 1979, Pastor Earl B. Clemons, the founder, was ordained by a committee of five local pastors. On that evening, the congregation adopted its constitution and officially became Gospel Light Baptist Church.
The church met in the Ruritan Center, the old Bonsack Methodist Church until June 1985. During that time the church bought eleven acres at 6307 Cloverdale Road. The church members cleared the property which had not been used for 25 years.
In November 1979 the church began its Missions Program. Rev. Hank Houbold was the first missionary. Since then it has grown to over twenty-five missionaries and their families. In 1984 into early 1985, the members built the first of three buildings. It was a small building 32 x 66 feet. Metal folding chairs were used until the purchase of twelve short padded pews. The Lord enabled the congregation to move into this first building without any debt. The first service in the new building was on the first Sunday of July 1985.
By early 1990, the congregation had grown to where an addition was necessary. A building fund was set up and by late 1992, the church had sufficient funds to start construction on the new sanctuary added on to the existing building. In the summer of 1994, the addition was completed debt free. In November of 1994 the congregation held their first service in the new chapel and began to use the older building for Sunday School and nursery.
By the year 2000 it was obvious that a larger sanctuary was needed. Again a building fund was started and in March 2001 the church held a ground breaking ceremony. The members again did most of the construction and on June 26, 2005, a dedication service was held and the congregation moved into the new sanctuary debt free. Sunday School rooms were added along with a Fellowship Hall in the large downstairs.
In March 2012, Pastor Clemons announced that he would be retiring after 33 years. The deacons started a pastoral search and after many meetings, the church called Pastor Brian Swafford and he served as pastor until the end of 2015.
Pastor Wayne Wyatt has served as pastor of Gospel Light since October 2, 2016. In the spring of 2017, our first building was remodeled to become our Teen Department. Our nursery also moved into a beautifully remodeled area downstairs in our Fellowship Hall. Our KidzZone was completed in July of 2019 along with some updating and painting of our Fellowship Hall.
In 2020, we expanded our nursery and updated our technology in the sanctuary and fellowship hall. On September 27, 2020, we voted as a church family to invite Colton Tucker to join our pastoral staff as our youth pastor starting January 10, 2021.
The future is bright as Gospel Light continues to reach people and be a lighthouse in our community.
